Ghanaian Glory in the Final Match of Gothia Cup 2026
The final match of Gothia Cup 2026 saw Irish side Newbridge Town FC take on Ghanaian team Accra Shooting Stars FC in the B18 category. Accra Shooting Stars FC showed their quality throughout the match and eventually claimed a 2–1 victory.
Accra Shooting Stars FC dominated the opening half. Agbogah Samuel had an early golden opportunity, but his effort was saved by Newbridge Town FC goalkeeper Cian Rushe, who produced an outstanding reflex stop. The Ghanaian side continued to create chances, and Daniel Opoku was presented with another excellent opportunity to break the deadlock, only to be denied once again by Rushe’s impressive goalkeeping.
In the 18th minute, however, the pressure finally paid off. Karim Mohammed fired a shot from distance that Rushe could only parry, and the rebound fell kindly for Daniel Opoku, who calmly slotted home to give Accra Shooting Stars FC a 1–0 lead.
The second half had barely begun when Newbridge Town FC's Eoghan O’Carroll was brought down inside the penalty area. The referee immediately pointed to the spot, and Josh Hamilton confidently converted the penalty to make it 1–1, despite the Ghanaians having been the stronger side.
Accra Shooting Stars FC refused to let their heads drop. In the 35th minute, Yaw Awuni broke free down the left wing and crossed for Attito Nelson, whose header struck the post. Just three minutes later, Nelson was in the spotlight again with an acrobatic bicycle kick that brought the crowd at Gamla Ullevi to their feet, although the effort flew over the crossbar.
The breakthrough eventually came. Yenzu Kweku Boadu delivered the ball to Daniel Opoku, who scored his second goal of the evening to restore Accra’s lead. After 41 minutes, the score stood at 2–1.
Accra Shooting Stars FC nearly extended their advantage in the 48th minute when Topper Elvis Yaw lined up a free-kick from 25 metres. His powerful effort struck the outside of the post.
Three minutes from full time, Attito Nelson had the chance to put the game beyond doubt after rounding the goalkeeper, but his finish sailed just over the crossbar.
With one minute remaining, Newbridge Town FC had one final opportunity to equalise after winning a free-kick right on the edge of the penalty area. However, the shot struck the defensive wall, and the Irish side came no closer to finding a leveller.
Accra Shooting Stars FC held on to win 2–1 and were crowned Gothia Cup B18 champions for 2026.
The final’s MVP was awarded to two-goal scorer Daniel Opoku. After the match, he was overjoyed.
