Gothia Cup Celebrates 50 Years – Berthold Happe Inducted into the Hall of Fame

Berthold Happe was awarded an honorary place in the Gothia Cup Hall of Fame during this year’s Leaders Party, recognizing his long-standing dedication to the tournament with SG Borken e.V. – It feels incredibly honorable and I’m very proud, he says, visibly moved by the moment.

At the 2025 anniversary edition of the Leaders Party, the Hall of Fame award went to Berthold Happe, who has participated in the Gothia Cup for 25 consecutive years with his club SG Borken e.V. Over that time, he has brought nearly 100 teams to the tournament.
– Coming to Gothia Cup has always been something special. It’s more than just a tournament – it’s about meeting friends and meeting the world, says Berthold Happe.

The teams he has led have become known for their strong team spirit, respectful play, and excellent conduct – making them valued ambassadors for both the club and Germany.

As Gothia Cup celebrates its 50th anniversary, the spotlight is not only on the football stars of tomorrow – but also on the leaders who make it all possible. The Leaders Party is an opportunity to honor the passionate individuals who, year after year, dedicate their time and heart to youth football.
– I am truly so happy to receive the Hall of Fame award and it means a lot after having participated in the Gothia Cup for so many years, says Berthold Happe.

The Gothia Leaders Party is not only a well-deserved reward for the leaders’ efforts – it’s also a unique meeting place where new friendships, collaborations, and connections are formed across languages and borders.
– Gothia Cup is not just about football – it’s about people meeting people. The Leaders Party is a symbol of the community we want to build, and the anniversary year makes it even more special. For 50 years, we’ve built something unique together. Now we celebrate that – and look ahead, says Gothia Cup’s Tournament Director Niclas Freiholtz.
