Finals day at SKF Arena offered a tough and even match between American side Miami FC and Swedish team HBK Linköping – two teams who had won all their games leading up to the final. After just seven minutes, HBK took the lead with a quick finish inside the box.
– It’s crazy, honestly. It’s an honour to be here and win with my team, with everyone around me supporting me, says match MVP Diego Martinez.
Despite strong pressure from Miami FC near the end of the first half, the score remained 1–0. After the break, Miami kept pushing and finally equalised eleven minutes into the second half. But the joy was short-lived – just minutes later, HBK won a free kick and scored with a spectacular bicycle kick straight into the top of the net, making it 2–1.
– I feel like the game could have gone either way. Both teams worked really hard, so it’s an honour to win, says Diego Martinez.
Miami FC didn’t give up. Not long after, a perfect through pass led to a calm finish and the equaliser: 2–2. With full time over, the match went to penalties – a long and tense shootout. After eight penalties each, Miami finally came out on top and secured the gold.
– There’s been so much hard work behind this. It’s been a long journey, a crazy journey – and one I’ll never forget, says Diego Martinez.
