Jonas Eriksson returns as Referee Ambassador at Gothia Cup 2025
After a much-appreciated debut as Referee Ambassador during Gothia Cup 2024, it’s now confirmed that Jonas Eriksson will return in the same role as the tournament celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer.

The former top international referee, who officiated in Champions League finals and World Cup matches, describes his first summer at Gothia Cup as a magical experience.
– The summer of 2024 was magical in many ways. But I probably had the most fun during Gothia Cup. After being away from the cup for 26 years (last time he himself participated, editor’s note), it truly felt like coming home. Seeing so much joy among players, coaches, parents – and not least the fantastic referees – left a lasting memory, says Jonas Eriksson.
Ahead of this year’s special anniversary edition, Jonas looks forward to even more time with the young referees.
– Now that the tournament celebrates 50 years, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be. Watching more games, spending time with the referees, and sharing some advice on how they can develop based on my experience. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get the chance to referee a match or run the line for a promising young official, he says.
As Referee Ambassador, Jonas’ mission is to support and inspire the referees throughout the week.
– My role is to encourage the referees who have the most fun – but also the toughest – job during the tournament. To help them build self-confidence, handle difficult situations, and support them through tough matches. And if I can make even one parent or coach rethink their behavior on the sidelines, then I will have made a difference, says Jonas Eriksson.
