Adults by the pitch who make a difference
During Gothia Cup, there are Team Stewards by every pitch to help keep things safe. – It’s easier for us referees to focus on the game, says Joel Wessman.

The goal of Team Stewards is to stop threats, violence, and bad behaviour on and off the pitch. Almir Karajkovic is a Team Steward for GAIS P12 in this year’s tournament. He’s had a calm week and thinks the crowd has behaved well.
– It’s good to have someone who can step in if something happens. It’s an important responsibility, says Almir Karajkovic.
Referees have also noticed a difference. Joel Wessman, referee coordinator at Mossens IP and Guldheden during Gothia Cup, says the role is helpful.
– The whole idea of the Team Steward works well. How well it works depends on the team and how many supporters they have – but having a Team Steward means we are always prepared, says Joel Wessman.
He explains that it helps to have an adult near the pitch who can take care of the crowd, especially when things get tense.
– It’s easier for us referees when we have someone to turn to. We haven’t had big problems with the crowd, but it helps that someone is there just in case, says Joel Wessman.
He also says it’s nice to focus on the match. Some referees have received help from Team Stewards when games get more intense.
– It’s one less thing for us to worry about. We don’t have to deal with parents on the sideline and can focus on the game, says Joel Wessman.
Team Steward is part of Gothia Cup’s Fair Play project called Celebrate the Game, run together with Kopparbergs.
