Gothia Cup

Jättestenskolan wins the plate waste challenge

During this year’s Gothia Cup, more than 422,000 meals are served – but it’s not just about football and food, it’s also about sustainability. In the Plate Waste Challenge, schools compete to throw away the least amount of food.

Jättestenskolan had the lowest food waste during yesterday’s measurement in the Plate Waste Challenge, which is part of Gothia Cup’s sustainability work. In the challenge, schools weigh the amount of food left on each participant’s plate, and the results are recorded day by day.
–The food’s been pretty good. I’ve pretty much always finished what I took. It’s fun that we won the challenge too, says Arvid Bäck, who has been living and eating at the school all week

The Plate Waste Challenge is a competition that aims to reduce the amount of food that gets thrown away. During Gothia Cup, more than 422,000 meals are prepared, and food waste is directly linked to climate impact. According to the project, food waste is responsible for 8–10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. By making participants more aware of their own food waste, both rubbish and carbon emissions can be reduced.
–We’ve been thinking about taking food twice instead of piling up too much at once and then throwing it away, says Arvid Bäck.
