Gothia Cup

The Journey - Minnesota Thunder Academy returns to Gothia Cup with high ambitions

Since 2017, the American club has made its mark at the world’s largest youth tournament with its talented girls’ teams. This year the goal is clear: to reach the prestigious Friday and Saturday matches in Gothenburg. For Minnesota Thunder Academy, Gothia Cup is more than just football – it’s a journey, an adventure, and a testament to the club’s global ambitions.

When Gothia Cup kicks off this summer, a familiar name will once again appear on the match schedule – Minnesota Thunder Academy. Since 2017, the club has taken part in the world’s largest youth tournament with girls’ teams in various age categories, and since 2019, their top players have competed in the prestigious Gothia Puma Trophy G17. This year’s participation is extra special. In addition to the Gothia Puma Trophy G17 and G17 teams, the club will, for the first time, also participate a boys' team in the Boys 17 category.

Based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, the club has made Gothia Cup an annual highlight and the grand finale of its competitive season, which runs from November to June. During the fall months, players compete for their high school teams and are not allowed to train or play with their club – making summer tournaments even more highly anticipated.

The journey to Gothenburg is long – both in distance and commitment. Players work part-time jobs throughout the year, while families and friends contribute financially to make the trip possible. After the tournament, the teams will enjoy a well-deserved stop in Iceland, where they’ll relax in the world-famous Blue Lagoon.

Minnesota Thunder Academy already has an impressive history at the Gothia Cup. Several of the club’s teams have reached Friday’s matches – a sign of playoff success – and on two occasions, the club has lifted the trophy by winning the Gothia Puma Trophy G17. This year’s goal? Nothing less than playing on Friday again – and earning a shot at the Saturday finals.

The Gothia Puma Trophy G17 team’s preparations are as strong as ever. Just a few weeks before Gothia Cup, the team will compete in the ECNL Playoffs in San Diego, where they will face the best G17 teams in the United States.

For Minnesota Thunder Academy, the Gothia Cup is not just a tournament – it’s a cultural experience, a lifelong memory, and a testament to the club’s global ambitions. With dedicated players, supportive parents, and a deep passion for the game, Minnesota Thunder Academy is one of many international teams that make Gothia Cup a unique gathering place for world-class youth football.

When the ball starts rolling in Gothenburg this summer, we know that Minnesota Thunder Academy will be there – not just to compete, but to inspire.
