Gothia Cup

SV Eutingen win G16 final thanks to late stunner

SV Eutingen - AS Laval 2–1 (1–1)

SV Eutingen from Germany lined up against Canadian side AS Laval in the G16 category and it was an even match until the end when a late stunner sealed the win for the German side.
– I can’t describe how incredible this is, says SV Eutingen’s Shania Volkert.

The sides were evenly matched from the start and for a long time the match was wide open. Germany scored first through Shania Volkert. The ball came into the box and several players attempted to go for it, with the German captain coming out the winner of that fight. The lead would not last until half-time, however, as Melina Malapetsas pulled off a great strike and equalised for Laval just before half-time.

Coming out for the second half, there was still all to play for. Both sides were looking for the goal and the Canadians had some good chances but were not able to convert any of them, and that was going to cost them. Laval had been applying the pressure but with only minutes left of the match and against the run of play, Eutingen’s Marie Gleixner caught the Canadian goalkeeper out of position and she managed to get a wonderful high ball in over the goalkeeper. The 2–1 result would stand until the final whistle.

Captain Shania Volkert has a hard time grasping what just happened.
– It’s incredible to be here, we won Gothia Cup, I can’t describe how incredible this is. We’re all happy to be here, says Volkert.

Reflecting on their journey through the tournament, the team’s willingness to work together stands out.
– Our key to success was to be a team, that we’re all together and support each other, she says.
