Swedish Gold in the G16 After Penalty Shootout Thriller

At Gamla Ullevi, Swedish side Bjärreds FF faced Icelandic team Stjarnan 1 in the G16 final. It was a close, intense and rain-soaked encounter, with Bjärred eventually coming out on top after a dramatic penalty shootout.

Stjarnan created the first major chance of the match after five minutes when Rósa María Sigurðardóttir found herself through on goal following an excellent through ball. Her effort went just a few centimetres wide of the post.

After just under 15 minutes, heavy rain began pouring down at Gamla Ullevi, while the match remained finely balanced. Stjarnan enjoyed slightly more possession and created a few more chances, but without taking full control of the game. The teams went into half-time level at 0–0.

In the 37th minute, Stjarnan took the lead with a spectacular goal. Lára Kristín Kristinsdóttir struck a powerful effort from just outside the penalty area, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

However, just six minutes later, in the 43rd minute, Bjärred found an equaliser. Signe Ingemarsson reacted quickly in a one-on-one situation and levelled the final.

Stjarnan then took clear control of the match and created several dangerous opportunities. In the 52nd minute, a corner from Eydís Lilja Th. Guðmundsdóttir struck the crossbar, and in the follow-up situation Thelma Lind Heimisdóttir fired a shot that was cleared off the goal line. Just a minute later, she tried again with another effort, forcing Bjärred goalkeeper Thea Ottosson into a great save.

In the final minute of the match, Thelma Lind Heimisdóttir found herself through on goal, but Thea Ottosson once again stood firm and produced an excellent one-on-one save. After 60 minutes, the teams could not be separated, and the final went to penalties.

The opening two rounds of the shootout were flawless, with every attempt finding the back of the net.

In the third round of penalties, Stjarnan missed, giving Bjärred the opportunity to take a clear advantage. However, Stjarnan goalkeeper Tinna María Heiðdísardóttir stepped up with a crucial save to keep Bjärred from taking the lead.

Bjärred were handed another opportunity when Stjarnan sent their next penalty over the bar. But once again, Bjärred could not capitalise, as Tinna María Heiðdísardóttir saved the penalty.

Viktoría Skarphéðinsdóttir stepped up in the fifth round and scored, putting the pressure back on Bjärred. But captain Signe Ingemarsson calmly converted her penalty to equalise.

The shootout continued into sudden-death penalties.

Then Thea Ottosson stepped up and made a save. Ellie Björkman had the chance to win the title for Bjärred — and she delivered. A huge celebration erupted at Gamla Ullevi as Bjärred secured the gold medal!

Thea Ottosson made several important saves for Bjärred.

The final’s MVP was awarded to Signe Ingemarsson, who was delighted after the penalty shootout victory.

– It feels absolutely amazing! It is fantastic to experience this in front of our friends, parents and everyone else. And with this incredible team. We have fought so hard to get here, and finally we have done it again!

Take us through it — what were you feeling during the penalty shootout?

– I always felt that we were going to win. I am very proud of the team for managing to come back after two missed penalties.

Now the team will celebrate properly.

– We are going to scream so much and sing along to our own song, she says.
