The Captain's promise became Bharat's path to redemption

After the loss to Special Olympics Finland the day before, Special Olympics Bharat sought a new focus ahead of the third-place match in the Gothia Special Olympics Trophy. Team captain Stalin Karunakaran promised not to eat breakfast until the team had won – and following their 2–1 victory, he remarked – We came back and won. It feels fantastic to get our redemption.

After the defeat against Special Olympics Finland the day before, Special Olympics Bharat quickly got a new opportunity to face the same opponent again. In the match for third place in the Gothia Special Olympics Trophy, a medal was at stake, and this time it was the Indian team that came out on top after a 2–1 victory.

For team captain Stalin Karunakaran, the preparation was about more than just the match. Before the game, he had decided not to eat breakfast until the team had won – a promise he kept all the way to the final whistle.

– I said I wouldn't eat breakfast until we had won. Now we have won, so I will definitely have lunch, says Stalin Karunakaran with a laugh.

When the final whistle blew, the revenge against the same opponent that had defeated the team the day before became a reality. For the team captain, the victory meant a lot after the earlier loss.

– We are very happy to win the match today. Yesterday we lost to the same team and today we won, so we got our revenge, he says.

After the match, Stalin Karunakaran emphasized the team's unity and the joy of finishing the tournament with a victory. For him, the celebration was mainly about sharing the moment together with his teammates.

– This moment is enough. Being here together with the team and enjoying this victory is the best way to celebrate, says Stalin Karunakaran.
