From Tahuichi to Cancheritos – Bolivia's Proud Tradition Lives On in Gothia Cup
When Tahuichi from Bolivia took Gothia Cup by storm during the 1980s and 90s, the club became one of the tournament's biggest crowd favorites. Now, a new generation continues the Bolivian tradition. This year's Gothia Cup sees Cancheritos FC participating with two teams – a journey made possible thanks to support from the Gothia Cup Foundation.
When talking about Bolivia and Gothia Cup, thoughts almost always turn to Tahuichi.
The legendary academy from Santa Cruz became one of the tournament's most successful clubs during the 1980s and 90s, winning Gothia Cup ten times. Several players from the famous team of 1984 later went on to represent Bolivia when the country qualified for the World Cup in 1994. Even today, Gothia Cup highlights Tahuichi as one of the most significant clubs in the tournament's history.
After Tahuichi's last participation in 2001, it took more than two decades before a Bolivian team was once again present in Gothenburg.
Only in 2024 did Bolivia return through Cancheritos FC. This year, the club is back – this time with two teams, in Boys 12 and Boys 13.
The journey to Sweden is long, both geographically and financially. Therefore, the Gothia Cup Foundation has contributed to making participation possible.
– It is an immense pride to represent Bolivia here. This is the third year we are participating, and each time feels just as special. I am very happy to be in Sweden, which is a fantastic country, and Gothia Cup is the best tournament you can play as a youth, says coach Franz Bustamante.
He also emphasizes the atmosphere around the tournament as something unique.
– It means a lot to play in front of such a large audience and feel the fantastic support. It is an experience that the players will carry with them for a long time.
For the players, the week is about much more than football. They get to meet peers from all over the world, experience new cultures, and create memories for life – precisely what Gothia Cup has always been about.
– I will never forget this experience. Playing together with the team and seeing how everyone has left everything on the pitch means a great deal to me, says player Thiago Santa Fe.
He also describes the encounters with teams from other parts of the world as one of the tournament's greatest experiences.
– It feels incredible to meet teams from other countries. You learn how other cultures play football and gain experiences that you take home with you. It is very fun and developmental.
History also shows the significance that an international youth exchange can have. Tahuichi inspired a whole generation and helped to put Bolivia on the football map. Now, Cancheritos FC has the chance to create their own memories – and write the next chapter in the Bolivian story at Gothia Cup.
