Gothia Cup
The American ladies won the World Cup this summer. With happy memories of that victory in France the 17 year old American girls in NorCal Premier PDP now enter the invitational tournament Gothia Puma Trophy hoping to reach the gold medal as well.
Monday morning the first matches of this year’s edition of Gothia Special Olympics Trophy took place. A few hours later the tournament had its opening ceremony where the founder Kim Källström talked to the players and audience.
Teams travel from all over the world to play in Gothia Cup, and doing so they cover a lot of distance. None more so than our two teams from New Zealand. When Wellington United Diamonds took to the field for their first game today, they had a 30 hour journey behind them, covering approximately 18000 kilometres.
It only took him one minute and 30 seconds to find the back of the net. Erik Bengtsson from Nättraby GoIF scored the first goal of Gothia Cup 2019. “It feels great, and hopefully I can score again in the upcoming games”, he says.
The world in one schoolyard? That was almost the feeling when this year’s SKF Meet The World teams gathered outside the school ISGR. Where teams from all over the world united with song and dance, taking pictures with each other and introducing themselves to their new neighbors for the coming week.
This year Gothia Cup are going to broadcast over 1300 games. Together with the Norwegian company Joymo, we have taken help of new AI technology. – This year are we taking the next step of live streaming, says Niclas Freiholtz, competition general of Gothia Cup.
It’s not only Gothenburg City that fills up during Gothia Cup. Inside Bravida Arena, the home ground of local team BK Häcken, the seats are quickly taken by players from across the globe.
Excitement and joy – two emotions many of the teams feel upon arrival in Gothenburg and this year’s Gothia Cup. The tournament starts in less than 24 hours and the preparations are in full swing. Enthusiasm to play against good international competition is common.
One day to go. The Gothia Cup Opening Ceremony is just around the corner. Tomorrow night 50 000 people will fill the stands at Ullevi and together celebrate the start of this year’s tournament. For the performers today is the time for some last-minute preparations.
